If you are a parent, you know that children can make it challenge to plan and execute a family getaway. Not so when you are one of those families living in the Texas Hill Country.
Let’s use Belvedere, a great place to live that offers Texas Hill Country land for sale, as our starting point. Even the local restaurant next door, Verde’s, has a children’s play area where kids can safely play while mom and dad order some great food and drink for the entire family. The Texas Hill Country is a great place to explore and there is a lot to do as a family and it starts nearby.
Texas Hill Country
The Hill Country starts on the west side of Austin and covers 14,000 square miles in the center of the state. Going east from our starting point an easy 30 minute or so drive into Austin opens up a great deal of opportunities for the family. Austin’s main park is Zilker Park and the Zilker Zephyr is a miniature train that the younger family members will certainly enjoy. The park is the ideal site for flying kites, playing fields and swimming in Barton Springs, a pool fed by natural springs.
Just off the main road that takes us from Belvedere to Austin you’ll find the Barton Creek Resort and Spa, where dad can play a round of golf while mom gets pampered in the spa and the kids play in the pool, discover the nature trail, or go on a Scavenger Hunt.
Heading west, after a stop at the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall (once the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson), we get to the town of Fredericksburg. Dating to the 1880s, Fredericksburg is a fun place to shop, eat and maybe stop for an ice cream cone. The main square in town is called “Marktplatz,” which typifies the German character of the town. Adm. Chester Nimitz, who commanded the Pacific forces during WWII, was born in this town and a museum is housed in the family’s hotel on the main street.
Just north a few miles is the largest rock outcropping in the state, Enchanted Rock State Park. Enchanted Rock is a fun climb for most family members. Camping, hiking and exploring the park’s 1,600+ acres provide fun and educational experiences. The Rock, a large pink granite dome rising 425 feet above the ground and covers 640 acres is one of the largest batholiths (or underground rock formations uncovered by erosion) in the U.S.
Camping And Other Outdoor Fun
Beyond that, continuing less than an hour away is Inks Lake, one of the seven “highland lakes” on the Lower Colorado River. The nearby state park offers easy accessibility to cabins, camping, swimming and other outdoor family activities.
Resorts And Lodges In The Texas Hill Country
If camping isn’t one of your family’s favorite activities, many resorts and ranches are spread throughout the Texas Hill Country. A look at Resorts and Lodges’ website is a good source to find those family adventures. Lakeway Resort, Running-R Guest Ranch, and Log Country Cove make up some of the more local-feeling resorts, an alternative to the also-present Hyatt Regency, Four Seasons, and Extended Stay Deluxe.
Even after all that we’ve mentioned so far, we haven’t even touched on driving south to New Braunfels for tubing on the Comal River, or going to historic Gruene along the Guadalupe River. But considering the size and scope of the Texas Hill Country, finding family getaways is not difficult; just ask a friendly neighbor. While in the New Braunfels area, make sure to stop by the number-one-rated water park in the world, Schlitterbahn, home to the world’s longest waterpark ride, the 3,600-foot-long adventure known as “The Falls.”
